Beijing Locked Down For National Day Parade

“The Chinese capital Beijing is under lockdown on the eve of a massive military parade to mark six decades of Communist Party rule, with gun-toting police manning street corners to ensure nothing spoils the event.
The show of force has grounded kites and pigeons, lined roads with volunteer grandmother security guards, prompted warnings to stock up on food and left harried citizens pondering who the festivities are really for.”
When an American city has a parade the mayor does his best to entice the residents to leave their houses and watch the festivities.
But in Beijing the residents may not even be allowed to leave their houses, the communist bosses are afraid that the citizens may use the parade as an opportunity to protest against the repression of the dictatorship.
In America for a July 4th parade there are food vendors in street corners, but for Beijing’s massive military parade there will be gun-toting police manning street corners.
I’ll take hot dogs and cotton candy over cops and tanks!

“Party In the U.S.A.” Tops At Number One On Itunes!

So I put my hands up they`re playing my song,
And the butterflys fly away, noddin` my head like yea,
I got my hands up, they`re playin` my song,
I know I`m gonna be okay,
Yea, it`s a party in the U.S.A.
It`s a party in the U.S.A
Party In the U.S.A.-Miley Cyrus-(written by Lukasz Gottwald, Claude Kelly & Jessica Cornish)

Party_in_the_USA_CoverThis single of Miley Cyrus is doing quite well. It must be striking a nerve in the central nervous system of young people all across the country. I must admit, it is a catchy little ditty. It`s hit # 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is on fire in other countries, like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Let`s see if it can go to # 1? Oh, it is currently # ONE on itunes.

The lyrics tell of this musician chick`s move from Nashville to Los Angeles. She scores a hit record when she hits L.A. This makes her buoyant with exceeding glee (it would me too), & she parties her exterior off at some glittery fabricated disco. Jay-Z and Britney Spears have provided some inspiration, apparently.

The video has pizzazz too! The humongous American flag as a backdrop aint doin` it no harm. It`s had 1,919,055 Miley Cyrus iiviews on YouTube-not bad! There are 15, 297 comments posted. Not too shabby-I`m panhandling a couple a hundred…I hope ya don`t mind Hanna? The bottom line, for me, is that Miley is morphing from a child star to a young adult quite successfully. The public at large is also monitoring this transformation very closely.                                                                   P.S. (B.S.) Eureka! This is The Beverly Hillbillies story all over again! No wonder it`s so successful…Ya know-the move from the country to the big city…Paul Henning must be turnin` in his grave…

Bull Escapes From Slaughterhouse

“Police in Paterson, NJ, managed to corral a 1,400-pound bull that escaped from a slaughterhouse yesterday.
Chief John DeCando, spokesman for the police animal-control division, says the bull was being unloaded at ENA Meat Packing when it broke loose and made a 10-block run.”
There may not be a bull run on Wall Street, but there was a very impressive bull run in New Jersey.
A 1,400 pound bull pretty much runs wherever he wants to, the mighty beast dragged the cops down a couple of streets before he was finally tranquilized.
I don’t blame the bull for making a run for it, if I was carted off to the Acme Human Meat Packing company, I would make a run for it also.
Unfortunately, the bull was returned to the slaughterhouse.

“Love Is the Answer,” Barbra Streisand`s New One Is Out Today!

Barbara StreisandBarbra Streisand`s new one, Love Is the Answer, is out today on Columbia, of course. It has twelve songs and a bonus track, You Must Believe In Spring. It is a collection of jazzy, mellow standards, such as Make Someone Happy and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Also included is one that Frank Sinatra made famous, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning. It is produced by Diana Krall, the pianist, arranger and songwriter.barbara streisand ii

Barbra is backed by a jazz quartet and there are orchestral parts, arranged by Johnny Mandell and William Ross, added to the mixed. A deluxe edition includes only Barbra`s vocals and the jazz quartet, harkening back to her earlier cabaret days. Streisand did a performance at the Village Vanguard on Friday, some forty-eight years after she opened for Miles Davis. *(sources-Wikipedia and A Fine Instrument, a Classic Instinct by Anthony Tommasini in New York Times-September 27, 2009)

Taco Vendor Wins Coveted Vendy Award

“A husband-and-wife duo from Brooklyn known for their delectable street tacos and peerless quesadillas were crowned the best vendors in the city Saturday.
Fernando and Yolanda Martinez‘s Country Boys cart won the highly coveted Vendy Award after sizzling and stirring their way to culinary perfection at the Queens Museum of Modern Art in Corona.”
Most New Yorkers only patronize street food vendors when commonsense takes a back seat to unrelenting hunger. I can’t remember the last time I was so hungry that I bought food from a street vendor.
I find it very surprising that there is actually an annual awards ceremony to celebrate the best in street vendor cuisine. Let’s face it most folks patronize food street vendors to satisfy their growling stomachs, and not to experience the best in the culinary arts.
But congratulations to Fernando and Yolanda Martinez, the next time I’m in the Big Apple I will eat one of their “peerless quesadillas.”

“It`s Getting Better”-‘Something Groovy And Good Found’ In Cass Elliot!

“Once I believed that when love came to me, it would come with rockets, bells, and poetry. But with me and you, it just started quietly and grew, and believe it or not, now there`s something groovy and good found whatever we got. And it`s getting better, growing stronger, warm and wilder, getting better everyday, Better Everyday.”-Cass Elliot (singer)cass elliot ii

Cass Elliot died on July 29, 1974 of a heart attack. She left us on a high note, since she was just completing two weeks of sold out concerts at the London Palladium. Cass never did choke on a ham sandwich, but died of a heart attack at the early age of 32. The fact that this silly rumor followed her in death is unfortunate. This reminds me of the line “no one`s getting` fat except Mama Cass” in the Mamas and Papas` song Creeque Alley. That always troubled me.

The truth of this is that Cass Elliot was really the Star of the Mamas and Papas. Her solo career was the most successful one, as the band parted ways in 1968. Cass made appearances in many movies and television shows in the early 1970s, and continued to shine. I remember seeing her on the Match Game and Hollywood Squares. And Cass sub-hosted The Tonight Show for Johnny Carson many times. Do you recall 4454267her jingle for Hardee`s: “Hurry on down to Hardee`s, where the burgers are charco-broiled?”

Cass Elliot transcends all this dirt (MacKenzie Phillips)! She will be remembered as a truly beautiful person. Listen to some her music and judge for yourself. My favorite is Better Everyday! Channel your LOVE & AFFECTION into MAMA CASS! *(source-Wiki)

92-Year-Old Granny Celebrates Birthday By Skydiving

“At a quick glance, 92-year-old Jane Bockstruck looks like your typical granny. She goes to Bingo, likes to crotchet and after six knee surgeries, doesn’t walk as well as she used to.

But get a glimpse of her soaring more than 13,000 feet up in the air, and you realize she’s anything but typical.

Bockstruck, of Swanzey, said she doesn’t quite know what made her decide recently that she wanted to hurl herself from an airplane.”

I  hope that grandma had all the proper equipment for her skydive: A properly prepared parachute, goggles and a fresh adult diaper.
Bockstruck should be applauded for her feat, but it was a tandem jump. That’s like Pee Wee Herman taking credit for beating a professional wrester when he is handcuffed to Mike Tyson, and the former world champion is the one who delivered all the meaningful blows.
But I give her kudos, I wouldn’t sky dive for a million bucks.

Huge Newborn Draws Spectators To Indonesian Hospital

“A baby made his way into the world this week in Indonesia at 19.2 pounds (8.7 kg) — about three times the weight of an average newborn.
Muhammad Akbar Risuddin, born Monday, is thought to be the heaviest baby born to date in Indonesia.
‘I was very surprised. I thought it was twins,’ said Binsar Sitanggang, the lead doctor in the cesarean-section delivery at Abdul Manan Hospital in North Sumatra.
The father is worried that he may be unable to afford enough milk for the humongous baby. It’s too bad that his babe was born in a backwards country, had that little freak been born in America he would have plenty of milk, and the parents would be drinking champagne. In our great country the little brat would be starring in a commercial for heavy-duty Pampers, and the parents would be busy spending the money
The boy has become a celebrity, rubes are flocking to the hospital to get a glimpse of the monster. It’s not like people in Indonesia have a lot of entertainment options.
Every time that freak of nature soils his diapers, I bet the parents will argue over who should change his diapers.
The parents don’t have the option of starring in a reality show or writing a book about life with the little mutant, my advice to them is to loan him to a circus.

Umm Kulthum-‘Star of the East’

umm kulthum iiI have been studying Egyptian travel books dreaming of a vacation to these distant lands. Fortune came my way when I noticed the beloved singer of Egypt, Umm Kulthum, in my travelogue, with her trademark sunglasses and spirited songs that made Egypt so proud. Her popularity can be tied into the rise of Abdul Gamer Nasser, who became the second president of Egypt from 1956-1970. Umm Kulthum *(spellings can vary) would give a concert the first Thursday of every month, and the streets of Cairo would empty as people gathered around their radios.

Umm has her own museum on the southern tip of Rawdah Island in Old Cairo. Her songs are long, almost jam sessions *(my narrow western view), where she does a call and response with the orchestra, it seems. Umm has influenced many famous artists. Namedropping would include: Jah Wobble, Bob Dylan, Nico, Bono, Salvidor Dalí, Maria Callas, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Led Zeppelin. Umm Kulthum has been given the name ‘Star of the East,’ for ways she unified the Egyptian people. Have a nice Friday!umm kulthum

What quality do you think Umm had that so galvanized the Egyptian people?
