A Dash of Barbara Steele Goth And A Pinch Of Morricone Is Peachy-Keen For Halloween!

Last night I was in a mood for Goth so I searched Netflix`s database for some Barbara Steele, naturally. If you have an account you can watch a movie instantly; I did just this with an Italian Nightmare Castle from 1965. Watch out, because it`s called The Faceless Monster here. An evil count tortures and kills his beautiful adulterous wife (Barbara Steele) and her lover, a common working at this spooky castle. But these folks come back to haunt this bad count, and some very creepy apparition scenes accompany this campy Gothic romp.

Low and behold, the music was done by Ennio Morricone, the spaghetti western maestro of Sergio Leone fame. There were ample spooky pipe organ sounds to properly tweak the timbre of castle drafts and illuminated ghosts that flutter around prodigously. Morricone provides one main tune, I call it the “Muriel theme,” which she wrote for piano; a bright, sentimental ditty that timely pops up in the multitudinous false denouements that bedapple the twining plot. No one dons a wig or crawls out of a crypt like Barbara Steele, so enjoy this in our Halloween season!
