carpenters christmas portraitI have the 1984 edition of the Carpenters Christmas Portrait, which includes both of their 1970s Christmas albums. Their hit, Merry Christmas, Darling, Karen and Richard Carpenterwhich was co-written by Richard Carpenter, has been re- recorded here, and Karen`s performance is not quite as awesome as an earlier 1970 single. I have included the single jacket, with those attractive Mop-Top hairdos. I`d love to hear that earlier version of Merry Christmas, Darling, so I will snoop around the record bins looking for it.

There are 21 songs in this package, but much of it is filler, instrumental musak, but serves as a pleasant backdrop *(for decorating your tree or wrapping presents). Karen`s performance on Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is signature Carpenters. And I dare anyone to top her Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire (Christmas Song)? Did you carpenters merry christmas, darlingknow that the Carpenters were the number one selling music act of the 1970s? That shocks me.

When the Carpenters were actually happening we would make fun of them. Hard Rock was the going thing at that time, and this sweet duo was an easy listening or soft pop act. I regret my insensitivity now. They were quite wonderful to listen to. There`s pathos in Karen`s voice that breaks you up, makes tears stream in rivers down your puffy cheeks. I will look for the movie The Karen Carpenter Story and a best of the Carpenters would make an excellent stocking stuffer for me! Hint hint hint… Happy Holidays! (source-Wiki)
