The Fifth Dimension`s “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” # One, May 11, 1969!

May 11, 2010 by

A cool feature, you can go over to the Billboard site and find out what song was # 1 on any day of the calendar year, and for most years too (like a few decades back, anyway). I did a search for May 11th, being today and all. Nothin` stuck out like a sore thumb, except 1969. Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In. It hit # 1 on May 11, 1969.

It`s a medley of two songs and comes from the musical Hair. Aquarius was # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks straight. The second part, Let the Sunshine In, is a mantra/chant in the tradition of the times (The Boxer, Hey Jude & Atlantis). The lyrics tell of a new age ushered in, filled with peace, love and harmony. This synchs with the ubiquitous idealism omnipresent in the culture of the late 1969s. It seems somewhat unreal now when we look back on it today.

There are many groovy versions of this song around, but the hit version by The Fifth Dimension is the grooviest! Check out the high-tech video of the song on YouTube! Stars, galaxies and mini-skirts swirling around against the finger-snapping anthem of youthful idealism, that doesn`t fade with time.

Unemployed Woman Rents Billboard: Hire Me

April 11, 2009 by

“An unemployed Connecticut woman has taken her job search to the side of a highway.
Pasha Stocking, of East Hampton, has rented a billboard along Interstate 95 in Bridgeport. The sign includes her photo and the message, “Hire Me!” It directs people to her Web site, http://www.hirepasha.com.

Stocking, a 37-year-old single mother, was laid off in June. She says has tried everything to land a new job in marketing and design. She also is interested in executive assistant positions.”

It seems to me that Pasha is more interested in her 15 minutes of fame than in obtaining a job. Renting a billboard for thousands of dollars a month is a very foolish and expensive way of attracting prospective employers.

It was unnecessary for Pasha to include her photo on the billboard, this strikes me as vanity. Her egotism and vanity is sure to turn off any employers who see her billboard.

It’s unconscionable for an unemployed mother to spend so much money on a billboard, her primary consideration should be her children and not garnering publicity.

Maybe if Pasha didn’t limit her options to executive positions she would already have a job. She should be prepared to flip burgers if that’s what it takes to feed herself and her children.

I hope her children are too young to be embarrassed by the antics of their publicity seeking mother.
