Are The Ruby Suns the rightful heirs of Psychedelia?

What ever became of psychedelic sounds anyway? One plausible theory is that they are reborn again in a New Zealand band, The Ruby Sons. Critics have claimed that Ryan McPhun is able to channel Brian Wilson ala the Pet Sounds and Smile period. From the handful of songs I`ve heard, I`m hearing a bit of the dearly departed Pink Floyd`s Syd Barrett in there too.

The Ruby Suns third album was just released on Feb. 15th on Sub Pop with the title: Fight Softly. I couldn`t find it on itunes yet, so I`ll look for it over at Waterloo Records. Cool cover, though! In the meantime, I`m scoping out some earlier cuts from Sea Lion, and am amazed at what I`m finding.

I have Tane Mahuta, Kenya Dig It? And Morning Sun so far from Sea Lion. Tane Mahuta has polyrhythmic drums and chanting vocals with a King Sunny Ade jamboree-guitar improvisation. Cross cultural, African and Polynesian possibly? Kenya Dig It? Has lots of keyboards and thumpy bass dripping in reverb. Western psychedelic, if you get my drift? The ending is reminiscent of Beach BoysMorning Sun is atonal and loops  like Steve Reich…Can`t wait for Fight Softly!
