Dave Fisher of the collegiate folk band, the Highwaymen, dies

Dave Fisher, a member of the original Highwaymen, has died at the age of 69. The Highwaymen were a big part of the collegiate folk movement of the early 1960s. The Kingston Trio or The New Christy Minstrels would be other good examples of this once burgeoning movement. Their biggest hit came from the fall of 1961, Michael, Row the Boat Ashore, an African American spiritual that uses a call and response structure. “The Jordan River is chilly and cold, Halleujua.”

The Highwaymen had other significant songs, such as Cottonfields and Gypsy Rover. They did Big Rock Candy Mountain also, a Depression Era song that makes good the life of a street bum who makes do with a subsistent existence. Cottonfields was written by Leadbelly and actually was lucrative for his estate in terms of royalties.

After the Highwaymen disbanded, Dave Fisher is the only member who continued in the music business. Dave worked in Hollywood in film and television, composing and arranging music. The Highwaymen had something of a comeback in the early 1990s when they got to open for the superstar Highwaymen (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson).

The Cambridge Tapes looks like the record to grab for this vintage folk band.
