Michael Jackson`s “Earth Song” centerpiece of 52nd Grammys

Lionel Richie quoted Michael Jackson, when he took the stage last night at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards: “In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to believe.” The centerpiece of the awards was most certainly Michael`s Earth Song.” 3-D glasses are required to watch the video, which featured new vocals of Usher, Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood.

And wasn`t it surreal to see Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks (The Welch Witch) perform Rihannon together? Clearly, the most spectacular moment came when Pink sang Speechless, suspended in space on a sling and then dipped down in water. She spun around and flung water on the crowd. Weird! Loved Lady Gaga and Elton John duet-the opening number.

I was disappointed in the awards though. Lady Gaga was slighted, but Taylor and Beyonce scraped in the lion share of little gold gramophones. The program itself was an improvement however, focusing more on a dazzling show and less on just giving out awards.

Have the Grammys ever been a reflection of our times?

Well the Grammy Awards are coming up on Sunday. Big Deal! But I will still watch them anyway to see who wins. I just found this great piece by Jim DeRogatis that was just published in the Chicago Sun TimesPredicable Grammys reward star power. The Grammys have always taken a conservative (or reactionary) bent, going all the way back to their inception in 1958. Please read Jim`s piece, but he argues that the music awards were created by old stalwarts, like Frank Sinatra and Mitch Miller, to counter the surge of a new phenomenon, ROCK `N` ROLL.

Now that`s a bit of information that`s of some use to me. Hopefully, I will be able to trade out my old cable box on Saturday, for a newer box with the Digital Video Recorder feature. I`ve needed it badly for some time. Then I will be able to record the Grammys and capture Lady Gaga, who no doubt will be pulling a rabbit outta some crazy hat (literally) of hers.

Not that I`ll take the winners too seriously, but for Album of the Year I want the Dave Matthews Band to win (Big Whiskey & the Groogrux King). This year the Grammys can be reduced to three pop divas: Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Lady Gaga. Who do you love? I think it`s poppycock that only the ‘music elite’ looks down on the Grammys as passe!

Hope for Haiti: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief is a telethon to help the earthquake ravaged people of Haiti. It will be hosted by George Clooney and Wyclef Jean, and will be aired on Friday, Jan 22nd, on just about every major network. The benefit will be a live broadcast from Los Angeles at 8:00 PM ET (7:00 PM CST), and will feature many stars such as: Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keyes, Dave Matthews, Stevie Wonder and John Legend.

George Clooney has hosted several of these type of global benefits before. He worked on Hurricane Katrina, 911 and the Asian Tsunami. Hope for Haiti donations will go to (for Haitian relief) Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef`s Yele Haiti Foundation. More than 100 performers will participate with a special collaboration in store between Kid Rock, Keith Urban and Cheryl Crow.

Gather Entertainment is reporting that 640 million households will be tuned in. I`ve been wanting to see Taylor Swift anyway, so I`ll be tuned in! And I hope George and Wyclef can raise enough money to help the people of Haiti.

The Grammy Nominations-Goin` `Gainst the Grain with Eric and Stevie!

beyonce*( Take your eyes off a bikini-ed Beyonce, young man!) The Grammy nominations were held last night in LA. Beyonce took the lead with ten nominations and Taylor Swift came in second with eight. Lady Gaga collected five and the R & B singer Maxwell, who has been out of the spotlight for eight years, brought in six of those chimerical accolades.

More interesting for me was a pick up of two nominations for Eric Clapton andmadison square garden Stevie Winwood.  Live from Madison Garden was nominated for Best Rock Album. They also pocketed one for Best Rock Performance for a Duo or Group for Can`t Find My Way Home. This song was part of the repertoire of the Supergroup, Blind Faith. The line-up also included bassist Ric Grech and drummer Ginger Baker.

Here is the link for all of the Grammy nominations (don`t snooze while reading). It gets complex, so you have to study the list. I can`t seem to muster much excitement for many of these newer artists. The Black Eyed Peas just don`t turn me on! I`ll try…Old Geezer Rock just gets my YA YAS OUT!

Taylor Swift iiTaylor Swift swept the Country Music Awards in Nashville by raking in four of those Taylor Swift iiicoveted awards. Taylor won Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year (Fearless), Female Vocalist of the Year and Music Video of the Year (Love Story).

Taylor is only 19 years old and her album Fearless has already sold more than 3 million copies this year alone (MSNBC). “I will never forget this moment,” she cried, as she accepted one of the trophies.

Here`s Taylor Swift performing at the CMA awards last night!

Taylor Swift Shines Like An Angel After MTV Stunt!

taylor swiftTaylor Swift was right in the midst of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video on the MTV Video Music Awards last night, when Kanye West abruptly grabbed her microphone. He proceeded to heap praise on Beyonce`s competing video, implying that hers was much better than Taylor`s. What was looking like a fairly dry affair was suddenly charged with controversy and newsworthiness!

CNN ran it as a Headline Story today, and coupled it in with other recent public outbursts, like Joe Wilson`s “you lie” blurt last week during Obama`s all important ‘health care reform’ speech. A…Serena Williams` outburst at the U.S. Open was also mentioned as ‘inappropriate behavior’ for a role-model in sports. Yet another public fopaux is mirrored by the booze-swilling Kanye West, who saw an opening to steal the ‘sizzle in the steak’ from the more wholesome Taylor Swift.

I am embarrassed to admit it, but I`ve never even heard of Taylor Swift. She should be able to make lemonade out of this lemon and boost her career now. I may even buy a few of her songs on itunes now. The poor lass was given a public lashing by that obnoxious rap artist. Kanye should be made to apologize in the congress chambers; maybe he could make a joint appearance with Joe Wilson and they could sing an ‘apology duet.’ *(source-CNN-photo is from 2008 MTV awards) **P.S. An AFTERTHOUGHT is that these ify celebrities are blaring Linda Blairs from The ExorcistTHE DEVIL MADE ME SAY IT!
