The Motown Museum In Detroit Will Be Buzzing!

hitsvilleusaI have a feeling that the Motown Historical Museum is going to get a lot of visitors in the days to come. It has an address of 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan, and has the sign HITSVILLE, U.S.A. prominently displayed on the front. It`s hard to fathom how much important musical history was made there, as I look over the Motown discography (1962-1971). The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, the Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, and most assuredly The Jackson 5 all called this house their home.

To set the record straight though, The Jackson 5`s early hits were actually recorded in Los Angeles. The three biggies, “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” and “I`ll Be There” were all written by The Corporation. This writing team included Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Deke Richards, and Alphonzo Mizell. “ABC” actually derailed Let It Be from its number one spot on the charts. Noteworthy also, in the light of yesterday`s perfect Memorial service for Michael Jackson, is Mariah Carey`s 1993 recording of “I`ll Be There,” which she performed yesterday. Pitchfork Media said that “I Want You Back” has “possibly the best chord progression in music history.”(Wikipedia) I have often believed this. *(Check out “Motown” by Joe McEwen and Jim Miller sometime! In Rolling Stone Illustrated History Of Rock & Roll.)

Anyway, I sure would like to visit this museum. It includes a photo gallery, costumes of the stars, and the original control room where early hits such as “Shop Around,” “Please Mister Postman,” and “Do You Love Me” were recorded. Quotes that caught my ear from yesterday: “He was a consummate student, he studied the greats, and became greater.” Berry Gordy about Michael Jackson. “Michael, you eat Kentucky Fried Chicken?” Magic Johnson
