There’s Nothing To Do In Alaska But Guess When A River Will Break Apart

“The ice on Alaska’s Tanana River has broken apart and now two lucky winners who guessed the timing of that much-awaited annual event will split a jackpot of nearly $284,000.

“My reaction was disbelief,” Claudia Russell said Saturday after learning she was a co-winner of the Nenana Ice Classic. ‘When I realized it was real, I was ecstatic.’”

The Associated Press

There is not much to do in Alaska besides looking at Russia from your back porch, killing wolves from a helicopter, and predicting when a river will break apart.

I am an inveterate gambler, when I worked in Oakland, California my office was located in a boulevard frequented by prostitutes, and my friends and I used to gamble which hooker would be the first to get picked up by a John. If I lived in Alaska I guess that I would also be guessing when the damn Tanana River will break apart, and when Sarah Palin will spit out another baby with a weird name.

If I lived in Alaska and I won a jackpot of $284,000, I would use the loot to get the hell out of that frozen wasteland.
